90% & 40% US Silver Coins. Please note coin may or may not have "IN GOD WE TRUST" Motto. A design made by the renowned sculptor of that time, Augustus Saint Gaudens, the Lady Liberty looks ethereal and divine on the obverse of the coin.

Thus President Theodore Roosevelt commissioned Augustus Saint Gaudens to create a design that would add graceful aesthetics to American coinage and as a result, the SaintGaudens Double Eagle was born when it was first minted in 1907. This coin is a sought-after commodity among collectors and investors worldwide. Made from 90% fine gold with a weight of 0.9675 troy oz. Obverse: Augustus Saint-Gaudens' Lady Liberty with a torch in right hand and an olive branch in left hand striding forward with her hair flowing on a background of rising sun and Capitol building. 46 stars encircle the image of Liberty representing the 46 states in the Union at that time.

Inscriptions - "Liberty, " designer's initials "ASG" and Year of Mintage. Reverse: Features an American Eagle in flight with the rising sun in the background.

Inscriptions - "United States of America" and the denomination. Mint issue from the following mints - Philadelphia, Denver, and San Francisco. The California Gold Rush in 1849 opened the flood gates for gold into the US Mint.

With the new found opulence of gold, United States Government came to a historical decision of introducing a higher denomination to the American coinage. These coins were minted from 1850-1907. In 1905 Theodore Roosevelt had asked Augustus Saint-Gaudens, a towering figure in American Fine Arts and widely acclaimed as the nation's preeminent sculptor to design his official inaugural medals.

The design of the medals instantly impressed the president. Saint-Gaudens brilliance and renown brought him closer to President Theodore Roosevelt, who had been thinking of changing the designs of American coinage. He personally felt that the present designs were hideous and the American coinage needed to be revived and beautified. He invited Augustus Saint Gaudens to fashion a prospective new design for the American gold coins Double Eagle, Eagle, and One Cent. Theodore Roosevelt and Saint-Gaudens were both great admirers of high relief coins of ancient Greece and both felt that American gold coins with higher relief would be a spectacular achievement. These high relief coins would be in sharp contrast to the two undistinguished looking coins that were being replaced, the Liberty Double Eagle and the Coronet Eagle, both of which were from the 19th century. The production of the ultra high relief Saint Gaudens Double Eagle started in 1907 which also had the denomination in Roman numerals.

Unfortunately, it took almost seven strikes to achieve the high relief. This damaged the dies after making only 18 to 20 coins, and there by drastically reducing production. Moreover, the coins could not be stacked properly, thus it was deemed unfit for commerce. Augustus Saint Gaudens was suffering from cancer, hence he could not complete his work to achieve a lower relief as he died on August 3, 1907.

Hence, Charles E Barber cut down the ultrahigh design and along with it, the Roman numerals that were dropped as most of the public was not able to understand these numerals which caused a lot of confusion. Instead of Arabic numerals, which everyone understood, were added. But due to insistence from the public, it was added in the later on releases. The Saint Gaudens Liberty is a modification of Fame from Sherman's Victory which is also a work of Augustus Saint-Gaudens. This is a coin that stands above the rest as the single most magnificent coin in the American History.
