1907 High Relief Wire Rim US Gold $20 Saint-Gaudens Double Eagle

First mint year for this amazing coin. This is how St Gaudens wanted all these coins to look- the extra stamping created this high relief very sculptural coin.

Only about 12000 were struck like this before St Gaudens death in 1907. His successor at the mint tried to continue using this slow, labor intensive process but the president, Teddy Roosevelt, demanded these coins be made available in greater numbers.

The result is the standard St Gaudens coins you regularly saw produced up through 1933. This coin bears no grade although it has been slabbed. It has been authenticated by NCS (Numismatic Conservation Services). Be sure to look at the pictures. The damage is to the left of of the figure above the rays below the L in Liberty.

The coin appears to have been circulated showing some wear. The damage has been speculated to have been someones initials that were eventually scratched. Many people carried a gold coin with their initials as a good luck token.
