This coin was minted in San Francisco three years after the 1906 earthquake devastated the City. Over 3000 people were killed.
The mint was partially destroyed but was rebuilt a year later. Mints in Philadelphia and Denver took on additional work until the SFO mint reopened. 1909 was a memorable year as both Shackleton and Peary carried out expeditions to the South and North Poles.
