1922-S $20 Saint Gaudens Gold Double Eagle NGC MS62 Bright Crisp Detail, Beauty
Only were minted, many were melted down and never circulated. The denomination was created as a means of exhausting an overage in gold supply due to the 1849 California Gold Rush. They were never intended for general use in commerce as the amount easily equated to a month's wage during the time of issue - making them impractical to carry as a coin. NGC encapsulation offers protection and guarantees the MS-62 condition of the coin. Conservatively graded in our opinion, PQ++ This is an amazing Gem. Mintage 2,658,000 many of which were melted down and a fraction only survived. Struck at the San Francisco Mint. Obverse: Depicts Liberty striding forward holding a torch and an olive branch with the U. Capitol building in the backdrop.
Reverse: Features an eagle in flight against the sun in the background. Beautiful color and very rare in this condition.
