The denomination was created as a means of exhausting an overage in gold supply due to the 1849 California Gold Rush. They were never intended for general use in commerce as the amount easily equated to a month's wage during the time of issue - making them impractical to carry as a coin. This is the 1st year of issue for this beautiful design. Housed in a old Green PCGS Holder.
Certified by PCGS decades ago and Conservatively graded by todays standards this coin is much nicer than the normal MS65. Struck at the Philadelphia Mint.
Obverse: Depicts Liberty striding forward holding a torch and an olive branch with the U. Capitol building in the backdrop. Reverse: Features an eagle in flight against the sun in the background.Beautiful Orange-Gold color and amazing eye appeal.
